Introduction

The development kit consists of 2 programs: setinq.class JAVA application and this simnetq Java applet. This demo explains how to setup your "data base" files for Internet access by your customers.

This approach may appear complicated, but it has been carefully designed to provide the utmost flexibility and power AT A LOW COST! There is no need for expensive ISP cgi programs and fees and no need to purchase a JDBC interface package. This could cost you well over $200 a year in ISP disk/cgi fees.

Data Specs

• After a little effort, you will be able to generate many file inquiry applets.
• We use a delimited text output file that can be prepared from your database program (usually as "export" or "save as"). simnetq uses "|" as the delimiter character.
• You specify the search fields, up to 4, and the fields to be displayed on your page, upto 10. Search (key) fields are limited to 9 characters, but other fields can be any reasonable size, character or numbers.
• The file size is restricted to 70 characters maximum for display purposes and we recommend that NO MORE THAN 1000 RECORDS BE PLACED IN THE DATABASE for speed in retrieval.

This site can be best viewed with Netscape 2 & Windows95. Java is a trademark of Sun Microsystems, Inc. This site can be best experienced with Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Using the demo applet:

Enter "A" in Begin Key and "Z" in End Key under "type". Click on OK and you will then see all records for your inquiry tests. Ranges and "don't cares" are permitted. All fields are "N" for numeric except "category".

Explanations / Instructions:

Environment Data

All file preparation is prepared in the JAVA application SETINQ. You will indicate the names of the "spec" file you generate as well as your Internet database file, including any subdirectories in your ISP main directory. Also required is your FTP port, usually 21, and your host domain name (ISP that you sign on to). Finally, your FTP password and signon name.

None of your "secure" info appears in the applet, just the names of the files for identification purposes. You can have several pages with different applets that you prepared in SETINQ.

1. Your data base cannot be larger than 70 characters. Fill in the positions where you wish each field to appear in the Layout. Be sure to delete as many characters as you added.
2. Use 'A' for character fields and 'N' for numbers. For example, a field 10 characters long to appear in positions 12 thru 21 will have a character in positions 12-21 above, followed by a space character. BE CAREFUL, NO EDITING IS PERFORMED AND YOU CAN ENTER MORE THAN 70 CHARACTERS.
3. Numeric data is entered as character data and will be displayed right justified. If you wish a format ("$",".", etc) for a search field, you will need to specify 2 fields: one formatted for display and one just numeric character data that is defined as a search field. Numeric search data is entered without formatting.
4. Separate your fields in Layout above with at least one space character (this defines field length). The first group of characters is Fld1, the next Fld2, etc. THIS IS THE WAY THE INFORMATION WILL APPEAR WHEN YOU RUN THE INQUIRY APPLET! Do this for field labels to appear in the applet.
5. For those fields that are KEYS, indicate in the first box in the appropriate place (Fld1, Fld3, etc) the KEY LEVELS (1 being the major key, 2 next key, etc and highest number represents minor KEY). Also indicate whether the field is in (A)scending or (D)escending order in the second box. If the field is NOT A KEY OR YOU HAVE LESS THAN 10 FIELDS, leave the entries blank.
6. You must prepare your database file according to your specs with all the fields in the file appearing in the order specified in above Layout.
7. THE DATABASE MUST BE AN ASCII TEXT FILE WITH A "|" CHARACTER AS THE DELIMITER. Double quotes will be removed.

Shareware Specs

This applet can be used for any file with the following parameters:

1. Must contain 5 data fields, all numeric except the first.
2. The 5 field lengths are: 20, 7, 7, 7,7.
3. There are only 2 search keys, labelled: category and price, respectively, and both are in ascending order.

The download zip file contains the applet code including the database name parameter "INQBase". You must prepare and upload this file as per the above specs.
